The legalisation of documents is often referred to as an apostille stamp. This is because an embossing stamp is placed upon the actual apostille certificate.
UK Record Office provide an apostille service to assist you in acquiring official UK Apostille Certificates for UK documents. The Apostille Certificate is normally requested by foreign authorities and organisations so that the document can be used for official purposes outside of the UK. It is also referred to as legalisation.
An Apostille is a special seal applied by an authority to certify that a document is a true copy of an original. Apostilles are available in countries, which signed the Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalization of Foreign Public Documents, popularly known as The Hague Convention. This convention, created in 1961, replaces the time consuming chain certification process used so far, where you had to go to four different authorities to get a document certified.
Apostille certificates have also been know as
- Apostille Seal
- Apostille legalisation or legalization (the American spelling)
- Hague convention apostille
- Document legalisation
All of the above refer to the same process of issuing an apostille certificate which is then embossed with a stamp or seal. It is simply a case of people using different terms.
